The Heath’s veteran athlete Darren Scott breaking records at 55

Runcorn: March 26, 2024: Veteran Runcorn athlete Darren Scott is continuing to rewrite the record books in Masters Athletics.

Just days after his 55th birthday Darren struck gold in the M55 200 metres at the European Indoor Masters Athletics in Torun, Poland, breaking the European record with a time of 23.95. The ‘flying Scott’ also picked up a silver medal in the M55 60 metres.

Runcorn-based Darren, a fitness instructor at The Heath Gym located at The Heath Business and Technical Park, took up athletics when he was 21 and competed at international level for Scotland. But when he turned 35-years-old, he became eligible for Masters’ competitions where he took the world by storm, winning numerous gold medals and smashing records competing against athletes who, in their heyday, have graced Olympics’ tracks.

Now, 20 years on, he is still winning medals and setting new standards.

Not satisfied with his remarkable sprinting exploits, Darren is also an accomplished Masters’ decathlete conquering endurance disciplines including 400 metre and 1500 metres races, hurdles, the javelin, pole vault, shot put, long jump, high jump and discus.

Darren now has his sights on gold in the M55 category of the Masters Athletics World Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden, in August to secure his position as one of the fastest veteran athletes on the planet.

In addition to being a fitness expert, Darren is a long-term supporter of the British Masters Athletics Federation which caters for adults of all abilities from the age of 35 up to 100 years of age who want to participate in track and field athletics.  Darren says that age is no barrier.

Mark McGrath, Manager of The Heath Gym, says: “I have watched Darren training for this event for months, most people will watch him race without realising what dedication he puts into his training but so much happens behind the scenes. Not only does Darren train hard he trains smart. I know he adapts his training to prevent injuries and to give him the edge against his competitors. To have Darren working in the gym is inspirational to our members and we are all delighted for him.”
