Success in challenging times…businesses expanding operations at The Heath Business and Technical Park

Runcorn: January 29th, 2021: While much of the business world is reeling from the devastating impact of COVID-19, a number of companies based at The Heath in Runcorn are taking more space to cope with growing demands for their services and products during the pandemic.

The Heath, an award-winning business and technical park, is currently home to 120 businesses supporting around 2000 jobs, with many of the companies focused on scientific research and development or delivering highly specialised services using cutting-edge technology.

Lesley Banks, Sales and Marketing Manager at The Heath Business and Technical Park, says: “This awful pandemic has had a massive impact on the world of business, but it is encouraging that some of the businesses located at The Heath are actually expanding their operations at this immensely difficult time which underpins the important work these often very specialist companies are under-taking.”

Among those expanding is SpheriTech, a lifescience business, taking on new office space and extending its existing laboratory after agreeing a licensing deal with a major veterinary medicines company for one of its patents covering antimicrobial microparticles.

Dr Don Wellings, the head of SpheriTech, says: “This is a very exciting and important deal which means we now have the funding to take additional laboratory and office space which will see the size of our operation at The Heath extend by about a third.” Dr Wellings adds that next month the company is also set to launch its own alcohol-free hand sanitiser and anti-viral face mask.

HTS Group, a leading Electrical Engineering Solutions provider which also specialises in Functional Safety Services, moved on to The Heath in August last year and has swiftly extended its operations at The Park. Its administration team has moved into a larger office with an adjacent meeting room for presentation and break-out space located near to the company’s new workshop and tech office.

Managing Director Martin Hold says: “When we relocated HTS to The Heath in August 2020, we quickly recognised that there were a variety of workspaces and services available at the site to support our business development. The Tech office allows our Design and Software Engineers to be located alongside our manufacturing team, enhancing team collaboration and efficiency across the full lifecycle of the build process. This new combined space will be home to an additional 8 team members (following the easing of COVID restrictions) and has facilitated the employment of a dedicated Technical Business Manager who joins us in February.”

Mr Hold added: “The highly skilled SOG technical team has worked hand in hand with our team to assist in the refurbishment of the new Workshop/Tech office, utilising their extensive knowledge of the building to ensure all building regulations are adhered to.

“The existing facilities at The Heath caters for all engineering needs for both on-site residents and also off-site companies and ranges from mechanical, both heavy and precision engineering, through to civil and joinery activities. Both the teams at SOG and HTS recognised early on the value added and additional benefits the new facility would bring to not only the local area but also to the wider industry and Research and Development communities.”

Pharmagraph, another specialist technology business which deploys its pharmaceutical monitoring systems to more than 30 countries around the world, has extended its satellite office at The Heath which has been operating from the site for 14 years.

Paul Wood, Project Lead, says: “Our office at The Heath is responsible for design, implementation, installation and testing, and the support and calibration of environmental monitoring systems to pharmaceutical, NHS and life sciences customers. We required larger premises to accommodate the growing demand for our services. The Heath is ideally located to many of our major clients where we offer ongoing support and maintenance of operational customer systems.”

Meanwhile another expanding company which moved onto The Heath last year is Optimum-Logistics, a freight forwarding, transportation and storage company. Founder Max Chytla says: “We specialise in general haulage and the main streams of our business involve supplying a range of goods to the retail sector with some of our major contracts focused on groceries and toilet tissue. Naturally, as a result of the pandemic there has been a high demand for the products that we deliver which has meant we have had to take on additional staff to cope with the additional workload.”

OL has a fleet of 10 articulated lorries and vans and also sub-contracts to other approved hauliers in the North West. Mr Chytla adds: “We decided to move to Runcorn because of its excellent location at the heart of the North West motorway network. The Heath is conveniently situated between Manchester and Liverpool where our prime suppliers are based and can provide the space for our transport fleet with office space that allows us to grow our business. SOG’s accommodation team have been really helpful getting us up and running here initially and then coming up with the additional office space when we needed it. They’ve been incredibly flexible, given us exceptional service and tremendous support.”
